Hybrid addresses in ISO 20022, explained

A hybrid address keeps Town Name and Country in structured ISO 20022 elements while allowing up to two 70-character address lines for the remaining details. It is one of the two formats SWIFT CBPR+ and SEPA continue to accept once fully unstructured addresses are retired.

Every ISO 20022 postal address takes one of these shapes. From the November 2026 standards release, only hybrid and fully structured remain valid.

The whole address is carried in free-text AdrLine elements. This is the legacy MT habit carried into MX, and it creates the highest repair, screening, and rejection risk.

SEPA introduces hybrid addresses with structured town and country plus limited address lines.

CBPR+ and HVPS+ follow. Banks may send structured, hybrid, or unstructured during the transition year.

Fully unstructured addresses are retired. Only fully structured or hybrid remain valid.

Value-Date Rule

Future-dated instructions with a value date on or after cutover need compliant address data before they reach the network.

Hybrid Or Fully Structured?

Hybrid is acceptable, but it is a bridge. The practical target for controlled data is fully structured output with the ability to render hybrid when a scheme or counterparty requires it.

  • Source data cannot yet be resolved to every structured component with confidence.
